New ways to protect your network

When setting up a home wireless network, security is very important. Without protection, anyone who is in range of your router’s signal can use the network. Also, unwanted computers using your wireless network can take up bandwidth, making the connection slower for you. Thankfully, it’s very easy to make sure your network is secure and your information safe.

Set a password
When you first set up a wireless internet connection, you probably won’t have a network password. You can set one as you go through the setup procedure for the router. Often, you will be directed to your cable company’s website, where you can choose your network name and specify a password.

Edit your security preferences

On your desktop or laptop computer, you can edit your security preferences. This is slightly different on pc and mac, but the basics are the same. You can decide how much “sharing” your computer will allow. Check your bluetooth settings, because other users can access your network and information via bluetooth connection.

Public Folders

Every computer has a public folder, and it’s intended for sharing information with other computers on your network. This is convenient for sharing between home computers, but never leave sensitive information in the public folder.
